Strengthening capacities to export live animals from Sudan

Organized through a project funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and led by Phylum (Dr François GARY) and France Vétérinaire International, a first workshop between private operators and competent authorities from the Ministry of Animal Resources and other ministries was held on September 29th and 30th, in Khartoum. Animal exports represent the third largest source of export revenue for the country.

This first meeting between private operators in the sector and the public authorities made it possible to draw up the outline of a strategy for the sector that can be very structuring for the entire livestock sector: development of electronic animal identification and traceability of movements, strengthening of certification procedures according to international standards, improvement of biosafety and animal welfare, better governance, etc.

A first initiative with AFD support which deserves to be pursued.
