Animal production development in Lata grazing reserve (Kwara state)

Phylum, represented by François Gary and Anaïs Redissi, is involved in a FASEP (Fund dedicated to finance feasibility studies) funded by the French Governement for Kwara state in Nigeria.

The objective of this project, led by BRLi is to assess the feasibility of a project to develop Lata grazing reserve with the Fulani communities. On April 23rd-25th, workshops was organized in Ilorin to share the findings and discuss the recommendations with decision makers and stakeholders.

During two days of workshops, in presence of the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development; Mrs Oloruntoyosi Thomas; Dr Sonia Darracq; French Regional Agroculture Counselor at the French Embassy of Nigeria; and all stakeholders, including representative of Fulanis pastoralists, the different possibilities to increase revenue in the reserve have been discussed.

  • Develop grass cultivation to increase fodder production
  • Improving access to water
  • Increase milk production and quality by developing a milk collecting center and better logistic
  • Increase mat revenue by fattening males.

The passionate debates have demonstrated the interest to involve all stakeholders at the beginning of the design of such project.
